Mikael Adam (born 30th November 1988 in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia) better known by his stage name, SonaOne is a gifted graffiti artist, music producer, songwriter, rapper and live performer. Born to parents who were both Club Med employees, Sona spent the first 10 years of his life living in various holiday resorts all over the world including Spain, France and Japan. His mother, who worked as a dance choreographer, was instrumental in shaping Sona’s taste in music as a young SonaOne observed his mother dig through crates of vinyl’s searching for grooves to use for her dance routine.
At the age of 9, SonaOne discovered Graffiti art whilst living in France. Fascinated by the vibrant colours and creative messages delivered by Parisian graffiti legends such as Serval, Mode2 and Nasty, Sona spent countless hours perfecting his art and searching for the unique type of “Wild-Style” which he now calls his own. By the age of 13, Sona had already established himself as a prominent graff-writer in Malaysia. In search of a new creative challenge, he began composing music using a Sony drum machine which was a gift from his uncle. He quickly realised he had a knack for producing beats and purchased a keyboard and a turntable with a friend. Famed for his jazzy and soulful sound reminiscent to music from hip-hop’s golden era in the 90s, Sona has already chalked up an impressive repertoire of music production work for an international cast of artistes such as Joe Flizzow (Malaysia), Sheikh Haikel (Singapore), Micbandits (Brunei), Dandee (Thailand) and Thaikoon (USA) among others. Around 2005 Joe Flizzow discovered Sona’s talent for rapping when the former heard Sona feature on a song that the latter had produced for some friends. Realising the obvious potential that this young 17 year old boy had, Joe Flizzow took it upon himself to mentor Sona. In 2010, SonaOne was offered a spot on Joe Flizzow’s label Kartel Records. Since signing to Kartel Records, SonaOne has kept busy and has not strayed from his prolific ways. Gaining new fans daily, listeners look forward to his annual mixtape release, “Illegal Downloads Vol. 1” (20 April 2010) followed by “Illegal Downloads Vol. 2” (20 April 2011). The critically acclaimed “Tuna Spaghetti” mixtape which was released on 30 November 2010 is considered by many to be the best hip-hop album of 2010 with hits like “No Snooze”, “Flyer Than You G6” & “Like A Dream” setting the internet abuzz amongst hip-hop aficionados. SonaOne is hailed by listeners for introducing a (much needed) fresh brand of witty lyricism to hip-hop. As if being known as a talented graffiti artist, music producer and rapper is not enough, SonaOne is also a very popular and accomplished live performer. He has already performed on tour in Amsterdam and Singapore and has shared the stage with the likes of Black Eyed Peas (USA), Rain (Korea) and Thaitanium (Thailand). SonaOne is also currently the resident MC of Kuala Lumpur’s biggest hip-hop party “The Get Up” at Rootz KL, rocking weekly with Kuala Lumpur’s elite crowd of party-goers. |
